The Mirror We Grow Up With — Good Heart Counselling
We first learn who we are by looking into the faces of the people who raise us. A child doesn’t see themselves directly — they see the reflection offered back to them.
If that mirror is clear, steady, and warm, the child grows into their skin with ease. But when the mirror is clouded by stress, silence, fear, or emotional distance, the reflection becomes blurred. A child begins to believe the distortion: “I am too much.” “I am not enough.” “My feelings are a burden.”
These early reflections settle into the body. They shape how we love, how we trust, how we speak to ourselves, and how we move through the world long after childhood has ended. Trauma therapy is the slow, gentle polishing of that mirror. At Good Heart Counselling, trauma‑informed work offers a new kind of reflection — one grounded in safety, compassion, and truth. Here, you are met with presence. Here, your feelings are not too loud. Here, your story is not too heavy. Here, the mirror is finally clear. Through this work, the old distortions soften. You begin to see yourself with kinder eyes. You learn to hold your own emotions with steadiness. You reclaim the parts of you that were never truly broken — only unseen.

Understanding Trauma
Trauma is the body’s natural way of protecting you during overwhelming events. Your nervous system might react by fighting the threat (fight), running away (flight), feeling stuck and numb (freeze), or trying to please others to stay safe (fawn). These are not signs of weakness but brave survival tools your body used to help you get through. In therapy, we can gently explore these responses together, helping your system feel secure again and teaching you that healing is possible.
Coping Strategies
Practice rhythmic breathing or grounding to stay present. You can also visualise a serene, safe space in your mind, picturing every calming detail as you inhale deeply and allow your body to relax into that inner sanctuary.
Finding Balance
Reclaim harmony by embracing brief pockets of stillness and gentle self-restoration. By nurturing your well-being, you create the vital space needed to explore new curiosities and rediscover the simple things that bring you joy.
